Mr. Kuchelmeister's research focus and work as co-founder and Head of the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research at the University of New South Wales Sydney (UNSW) Multi-Media Laboratory and previously at the ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe Germany involves immersive visualisation, omni-directional capture systems, augmented and mixed-reality applications, stereoscopic capture and image processing, user interfaces, non linear narrative structures and the industrial and artistic applications of these research fields.

Mr. Kuchelmeister is co-Inventor and joint Intellectual Property holder for AVIE-Advanced Visualisation and Interaction Environment, AVIE VR Interaction Device, iDome and Curved Screen. He has a significant role in the commercialisation of iCinema’s research output (Mines Rescue Pty Ltd. contract totalling over A$6.2million), received as joint Chief Investigator a total of A$650,000 in competitive Australian Research Council grants and as joint investigator A$189,000 in UNSW infrastructure grants.

In the performing arts he was working with theatre director Robert Lepage and choreographer/dancer Saburo Teshigawra on large scale multichannel stereoscopic video installations (Lip Synch 2010, Double District 2008), with Liz Lecompte and the New York City based experimental theatre company The Wooster Group on a 360º immersive theatre installation (There is still time … brother, 2007), with choreographer William Forsythe on the award winning interactive publication and installation Improvisation technologies- A Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye (1994-1999) and with Japanese traditional theatre performers Mansaku and Mansai Nomura on the award winning DVD publication series Nomura & Mansai,That's Kyogen (2000).

His work is exhibited world wide, amongst many others at the ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, Shanghai eArts Festival, Powerhouse Museum Sydney, Vitra Design Museum Weil am Reihn and Volcan Scène nationale du Havre France.

In 2009 Mr. Kuchelmeister was appointed a Visiting Research Fellow at the ZKM Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe to conduct groundbreaking research and development in Universal Capture and Scene Reconstruction and innovative user interface concept prototypes.

Currently Mr. Kuchelmeister is appointed as lecturer across the School of Media Arts and School of Design Studies at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales Sydney and is acting as Head of Multimedia Laboratory at the iCinema Research Centre.
